Must-Read Books on Environment & Climate Change

Summer is here, and a perfect way to spend time is to read. If you’re unsure about what to read, what about learning about our planet? Environmental books cover a range of topics, from sea-level rise to pollution. Without further ado, here are some books that help educate you on the environment:

  • Rising by Elizabeth Rush

Rising dives into a story about entire communities around the world that lost their homes and lifestyles due to climate change. The book became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction as well as the winner of the National Outdoor Book Award.

  • Storming the Wall by Todd Miller

Like Rising, Todd Miller tells the story of climate change refugees forced to leave their homes. A recipient of the 2018 Izzy Award for excellence in investigative journalism, Storming the Wall highlights global warming and the environmental problems of America’s current stance.

  • The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace Wells

Named by The Washington Post as “this generation’s Silent Spring”, The Uninhabitable Earth covers not only global warming, but aftermaths of environmental challenges such as climate wars, refugee emergencies, and economic devastation. The book serves as an outcry for action, emphasizing that our generation bears the responsibility for our planet.

  • Where the Water Goes by David Owen

Where the Water Goes takes us on a journey along The Colorado River––through farms, government offices, campgrounds, pumping stations, and more. David Owen warns us about the possible failure and the devastating effects of engineering marbles, aging infrastructure, and legal agreements that enable life to flourish in the desert.

  • Silent Spring by Rachel Carson

Almost everyone has at least heard about Silent Spring before––Carson brings to light the misuse of chemical pesticides and the full extent of their harm to the environment. She calls for humans to take responsibility for their planet.

If you seem interested in the descriptions for any of the books above, why don’t you add it to your summer reading list? You’ll be in it for a treat!
