Along with high global temperatures, come long dry spells, droughts and intense water shortages. Water scarcity has become a crucial issue in the last several years; according to the World Health organization, half of the world’s population could be living in water-stressed areas by 2025. Currently, there are more than 1.2 billion people who lack access to clean drinking water.
Water is one of the most important substances on Earth, as all life depends on it. But in addition to water’s necessity towards our health, it is also used for sanitation, handwashing, and agricultural uses. Without water, respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses can spread easily (due to a lack of sanitary practices), food safety can also be affected, as well as cross-contamination of crops.
Jordan, one of the most water-poor countries, predictions of future droughts depend highly on the increasing global temperatures. Conditions are expected to get far worse, if greenhouse gases are not reduced efficiently.
Water scarcity is another problem posed by climate change; another problem that could be solved if we work together to help solve climate change.
