Could climate change expose new epidemics?

Over 760,000 lives have been taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, and cases continue to be on the rise. The devastation and horror this pandemic has brought to the world in a matter of months are shocking. But considering the circumstances surrounding climate change and the ongoing pandemic combined, could it be possible that future epidemics will occur?

Climate change is quickly emerging as a significant reason behind the rise of infectious diseases in the world, “whether by expanding the footprint of malaria and dengue-carrying mosquitoes or defrosting prehistoric pathogens from the Siberian permafrost” (Phys.org). Long-dormant viruses brought back could wreak havoc on the world and its population, causing irreparable damage that will take years to fix.

The permafrost in Siberia is a large example of climate change bringing about new illnesses into the human environment. Prehistoric microorganisms in the frozen permafrost can survive for long periods and possibly return to the current day ecosystems. Jean-Michel Claverie, a genomics professor of the School of Medicine of Aix-Marseille University in France, and his lab mates successfully revived viruses from the creatures in the permafrost that are over 30,000 years old!

Claverie adds that the real danger would be in deep permafrost, where unknown pathogens that haven’t been in daylight for millions of years, could possibly be exposed due to climate change. This could lead to other epidemics — involving unknown illnesses.

This speculation around the revival of prehistoric viruses and bacteria is still under research, and not much is currently known. However, climate change is increasing the spread of already existing diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, zika, and chikungunya.

According to Phys.org, “more than five billion people could be living in malaria-affected regions by 2050 of climate change continues unabated, but strong economic growth and social development could reduce that number to less than two billion.” For the time being, there is still much more to learn and discover on this topic. Scientists around the world are researching and trying to determine the extent of the impact of prehistoric viruses if they do spread to human populations. Hopefully, by combating climate change, we will be able to reduce the chance of such horror ever occurring.
